چکیده

We introduce a hierarchical image-space method to robustly terminate computations in Monte Carlo image synthesis, independent of image resolution. The technique consists of a robust convergence measure on blocks which are either recursively subdivided or terminated independently, using a criterion which separates signal and noise based on integral estimates from two separate sample sets. The technique can be easily implemented, as the evaluation of the error measure only requires a second framebuffer and a list of non-terminated blocks. Based on the stopping criterion, one can furthermore sample both the image plane as well as the light sources adaptively. Adaptive sampling reduces the number of samples required to gain the same root mean square error to one quarter in some of our test cases.

High Quality Final Gathering for Hierarchical Monte Carlo Radiosity for General Environments

Aiming at rendering high quality images robustly for general environments with simple algorithms, we use a two-pass method that accounts for the global illumination. In this paper we present the integration of a new gathering procedure in the rendering pass, that uses the approximate results obtained by a particle tracing method, an extension of the Hierarchical Monte Carlo Radiosity (HMCR) alg...

Acceleration of Monte Carlo Path Tracing in the Presence of Anisotropic Scattering Media

This paper describes a two pass algorithm to compute physically accurate solutions of the global illumination in scenes including anisotropically scattering media faster than previous methods. This is achieved by combining the strengths of finite elements and Monte Carlo methods. A quick rough solution is first computed with a view independent clustered directional hierarchical method. This sol...

Acceleration of Monte Carlo Path Tracing in General Environments

This paper describes a two pass algorithm capable of computing solutions to the global illumination in general environments (diffuse or glossy surfaces, anisotropically scattering participating media) faster than previous methods, by combining the strengths of finite element and Monte Carlo methods. A quick coarse solution is first computed with a clustered directional hierarchical method. This...
